What is a cabochon or cab cut?

A cabochon or cab cut stone is a highly polished and shaped stone with a rounded or convex top and no faceting. It can have a flat or slightly domed base. Oval is by far the most popular shape cab cut but cabochons may be cut in any shape. Opals, turquoise,
onyx, moonstones, and star sapphire stones are almost always cut in cabochon. It is easier and less expensive to produce a cabochon than it is to cut a faceted gem. All gemstones were produced as cabochons before the art of faceting was developed.
