Most of the major cruise lines have suggestions on their websites regarding what to wear on the cruise ship you are sailing. Check their website before you decide what to pack. The weather where you will be spending your cruise is the first consideration before you begin packing. Other important things to know are how formal or casual the ship is that you will be cruising on and the length of your cruise.


 

In general for warm weather cruises bring clothing that is light weight and cool like cottons and silks. Pants, shorts and sundresses for ladies and some informal evening wear. For cooler destinations bring warmer clothing. However think layering for all cruises. Air conditioned ships may be cool and require sweaters, etc. The less you bring the better and more enjoyable your vacation will be.

There are a few cruise lines that might require a tuxedo and floor length or cocktail dresses for some evenings. For cruise lines that are black tie optional you may want to bring a cocktail dress for some evenings or certain restaurants. The majority of large cruise ships suggest casual elegance that is stylish and comfortable for evening. The large cruise ships may also have a casual dress restaurant for more relaxed clothing. To be in good taste avoid wearing jeans and shorts at dinner.
