Can I makeover my wardrobe on a budget? I’m going into 10th grade & I am a tall, flat chested, skinny black Nigerian girl with scars on my legs, & chest that I don’t like to show. My closet right now is filled with jeans & t-shirts.

Can I makeover my wardrobe on a budget?A wardrobe makeover is always possible even on a budget. Congratulation on wanting to improve your look with a wardrobe makeover. Wearing jeans and t-shirts all of the time is very boring. Before you start on your upgrade project don’t throw out all your jeans and t-shirts (teen’s staples) and answer a few questions. What is your body type? Knowing your body type is important so you can choose styles that flatter your figure. What activities do you do in addition to attending school? The activities that you take part in dictate what clothes you need in your closet such as if you like hiking, playing tennis, yoga, get-to-gethers with friends / party and church, etc. What do you want to accentuate (show off) and / or hide? What are your best colors? Once these questions are answered you can make a list of the activities you are involved in and what you need to wear for each activity and make a basic wardrobe plan.

Next make a list of the clothes that you have for these activities and what you need. Some clothes will work for a number of activities. Keep your “need list” with you when you shop. Shop the sales and you will make your money go further. You don’t have to go out and buy everything you need at once.

Teen age years are a great time to experiment with fashion and see what styles and colors look best on you. Keep in mind the looking good basics: beautiful skin (protect with sunscreen everyday) and a nice figure (eating healthy). A flattering hairstyle, flattering makeup (if you wear it) and attractive earrings / jewelry will draw attention upward to your head area away from your body.

These words still keep ringing in my ear.  “Keep your head up, keep your shoulders away from your ears, and open your chest” was another of my mother’s constant refrains to my sister and I as young girls.  For those who practice Pilates, these words must sound very familiar.

Health Care Basics
Good health care involves not only good nutrition and physical activity but leading a healthy lifestyle and of course great family genes helps. Leading a healthy lifestyle means getting enough rest and drinking in moderation (or not at all), and avoiding drugs like nicotine, etc.
