Heel Heights and Hemlines for Business

Heel Heights and Hemlines for BusinessHeel Heights
Common sense and good taste should always rule.

Heel heights – I can’t remember when there have been so many choices in shoe styles and hem lengths. It seems like anything goes! But not for business attire!

A general rule to follow is that lower hemlines look better with higher heels and higher hemlines look better with lower heels or flats.

Heel Heights that are 1-1/2 – 2″ flatter most legs and you can wear them with most hem lengths. If you are heavy, short, or short legged wear a higher heel 1″ or more. A little heel will make you look taller and trimmer.

A 3″ heel is the maximum height in the office. High heels command more respect and suggest power. Keep a pair at the office for important meetings if they are uncomfortable to wear all day long.  Common sense and good taste should always rule. I can’t remember when there have been so many choices in shoe styles and hem lengths. It seems like anything goes! But not for business attire!

Stilettos force the foot into an unnatural position and throw the body out of its natural alignment. This can lead to back and neck problems.

Patterns and Bright Colors: Patterns, like animal prints, or brightly colored shoes draw attention to your feet and legs-so beware! If you have heavy legs or ankles you’d be wise to avoid them. Patterns and wild-colored shoes aren’t in good taste for business.

Shoe Styles

Closed-toe, sling back pumps are generally acceptable in most business settings. Heavy shoes also will call attention to your legs. Best for walking and / or hiking. The more foot that shows, the less businesslike the shoe. Sandals, mules, flip-flops, and T-straps are not appropriate for traditional businesses.

Hemlines that come mid knee or longer are best with a 3″ heel and most professional looking.

If you want to wear a shorter hemline wear opaque stockings so your bare legs, etc. aren’t showing. No more than 2″- 3″ above the knees. It also gives a more slimming look. Remember miniskirts get shorter when you sit down. Miniskirts are unacceptable in the office. Wear Tights with skirts above the knee.
