Think Classic Styles Not Trendy

You are the Mother of the Groom. You want to look great and make a good impression at your son’s wedding. How do you begin to choose an outfit? If you can, talk to the bride about her color scheme for the wedding and find out what type of wedding she is planning (daytime or evening).

Next talk to the brides mother to find out what she is planning to wear. It’s customary for the mother of the bride to purchase her dress first. Once the bride’s mother has chosen a dress you can begin the process of looking for your outfit.

Before looking for your outfit talk to the bride-to-be to find out if she has any preferences such as color, length of dress, etc. for your clothing. Avoid wearing the same color dress or something that clashes with the bride’s mother’s outfit.

For a formal wedding  a cocktail or floor length dress is appropriate. A cocktail dress for a semi formal wedding is the way to go. A dress or suit is good for a daytime ceremony.

To avoid stress start shopping early for an outfit that flatters your figure type, fits well and is in good taste (not too tight, too short or too low in the front). Think classic styles not trendy. Trendy clothes date your look in wedding photos. If you want help talk to a personal shopper at your favorite department store.

Tips:

  • You may want to bring a friend and shoes with the heel height you plan to wear on the wedding day when you go to try on clothes.
  • Any color that the bride approves is OK.
  • Pants are acceptable if they are more flattering on you.
  • Don’t try to out shine the bride.
