  • Lisa Spivey, Global Business Consultant

     Lisa thinks that the work related challenge is "...getting companies to implement a global mind-set into their entire company overview and not just on a project by project basis."  For example, companies who call themselves global continue to make decisions from US headquarters rather than involving the key team members from around the world.


     
  • Sue Hayes, RN Nurse Manager

    Sue Hayes is the Nurse Manager of an OB / Well Newborn Nursery, at Mission Hospital (a 250 bed trauma center), located in Mission Viejo, California (Southern Orange County). She is in charge of a 26 bed OB unit and says "I am on call 24 hours 7days a week." However, Sue is usually at the hospital 4 days a week for a 10 hour day shift, arriving around 6 am and working until 4 or 5 in the afternoon.
  • Michele Hennessey, Director of Product Development

    An enjoyable aspect of Michele's job is attending all the product shoots for stills and TV commercials.  She oversees the making of the products to make sure the products shown in the TV commercials are representative of the products that are sold in their restaurants. She also enjoys seeing products come to market that she was responsible for.



  • Virginia Bonofiglio, FIT Professor

    Keeping current on all the industry changes, government regulations, marketing and the current retail environment are challenges she faces.  "In order to be an effective teacher of students focused on going into the workplace, you need to know what's happening today, not what happened yesterday.  You must stay abreast of everything new that is happening. This industry, like all industries, is changing dramatically."
  • Terese Genecco, Multi-Instrumentalist and Vocalist.

      In a typical day, Terese spends 90% of her time on the business end. She has to do booking, marketing, promotion, and research, (looking for venues, festivals, and gig opportunities on the internet). She also spends time doing interviews, sending out mailers, writing an email newsletter for her fan base, and updating promotional materials.

     



  • Kristin Rozum, Sr. Games Producer


      New developments in this field are the numbers of people playing the online games and social networking, which is community building on mobile phones, computers and consoles. In addition there are two technologies that will affect game development: Nintendo's Wii motion detection technology and the iPhone. It is not known to what extent the iPhone will have on the industry yet, but they are changing the nature of mobile phones into more high end and powerful PDA's.
  • Jo Ellen Arntz, Company Manager, Smuin Ballet

    Jo Ellen says the most rewarding aspect of her job is working with the dancers, a few of whom are her former students, and watching new works being created. Her biggest challenge is time to get everything accomplished. She finds flexibility and being able to make quick decisions a key factor in the success of this job. Jo Ellen thinks it would be difficult to run this business if computers had not been invented.
  • Yidan Wong, Chinese Tour Guide

    She explained that a tour guide's job is mentally and physically strenuous as it is very competitive in Beijing where there are over 10,000 guides.  To be successful as a tour guide, Yidan believes you must be passionate about the job, like people and be flexible. A good command of the English language is a prerequisite so that you can be understood. In addition, you must have good knowledge about the subjects and places you are touring.
  • Sarah Schafer, Executive Chef

    In her current position, Sarah is in charge of the whole restaurant operation.  This involves supervising 15 employees in kitchen and 15 employees working in the front. Sarah's work day begins at 8 or 9 in the am until 9:30 or 10 pm at night.  She does just about everything: butchering proteins, prepping any part of any station (like Sauces), ordering, inventorying, talking to purveyors, customers and even answers the phone when needed.
  • Carmen Campollo, Sr Vice President FTSE

    To be effective at FTSE, Carmen says she does a lot of reading to keep abreast of new trends in the market. She is responsible for identifying potential clients and understanding their needs and investment policies. She also discusses investment strategies, statistics and competitive analysis with institutional investors and looks for ways that she can assist them.
