Tips on Choosing the Right Handbag

By Dunya Carter

"Choosing the right handbag
can be as important as choosing the perfect pair of jeans."

Choosing the right handbag may seem like an easy task. Just pick a cute one and throw it over your shoulder as you head out the door. After all, if the bag is cute or stylish, can hold all of your stuff, and somewhat matches your outfit, it has succeeded in being all it can be to your wardrobe. Right? No, not at all. Handbags are not that simple. They can alter the lines of your body, accentuating the positives and masking the flaws. Choosing the right handbag can be as important as choosing the perfect pair of jeans.

The size of the handbag is the first consideration in the selection process and is centered on your body type. Those with more curves might find a thin, rectangular clutch more flattering than a bulky beach bag style. For a figure that is tall and thin, a chunky bag will suit best. The second consideration in choosing a great handbag is shape. The handbag shape should be similar to your own body shape. The eye is drawn to the bag, so choosing a shape that is inconsistent with your own may clash with the natural lines of your body. Material falls third to the list of considerations. Handbags are made from a variety of materials including leather, cotton, polyester, vinyl, and suede. Leather handbags have the most durability while cloth handbags are the easiest to clean.

Design of the handbag and its intricate details should not detract from your wardrobe, but rather enhance it. If the only part of you noticed with you walk in the room is the shining, sequined bag at your side, it may be too decorated to complement the outfit for which it has been chosen. Finally, color should be considered. A bold, brightly colored handbag may not be the best choice for a night out on the town. Care should be taken to coordinate color to the outfit worn or to the purpose of the bag. If an every day handbag is needed, neutral colors are best. If the handbag is dedicated to only dress occasions, then black, ivory and cream work well. Bold colors are great for matching particular outfits or specific outings. A handbag used on the beach, for example, should be a vibrant splash of color.

Stylish handbags are an important accessory to any outfit. In the end, the one you choose should accentuate your style while hinting at your unique personality. The handbag is an extension of your inner self shown to the world. It is more than a cute place to store your phone. Although, by following the tips above, you can rest assured that you will always have the cutest bag around, no matter the choices you make.
