Polester is making a strong comeback this season and more pricey than ever. What is the new polyester like? The new polyester fabrics are lighter, thinner and more delicate than what we remember.
Actually, polyester came back in the '90's as "microfiber" a lighter, thinner fabric used in undergarments and athletic wear. Designers have been using blends of microfiber with cotton or wool in wearing apparel like suits, trench coats, etc. giving them wrinkle and water resistant attributes for the last decade.
What led to the resurgence in popularity? Technology. Japanese fabric producers have developed new types of synthetics like super fine polyesters (1/40th the thickness of a human hair) in crepes, satins and twills. These fabrics have lighter finishes than natural fibers. In addition, some of these new fabrics can be molded to hold particular shapes.
French, Italian and American designers have polyester creations in high end stores this spring and more to come in fall 2008.
