Spring and Summer Trends 2009

A hodge podge of style characterizes the trends women are facing this Spring and Summer 2009. The good news is that there is something for everyone. The bad news is this can lead to a lot of confusion. Keep in mind fashion trends come and go. Dressing in good taste means taking into consideration your figure type, age, coloring, and occasion when choosing what to wear.

Adjectives describing this seasons trends are flirty, sophisticated, and architectural. Colors are blue, pink, nude, navy, lime green, lilac, cerise, white and navy. And of course black and white combinations are always in style.

Fabrics with sheen and shine, transparent/sheer and perforated will be popular this Spring and Summer. Animal prints, florals and plaids continue to be popular. Plus you will see plenty of stripes, polka dots and checks.

Asymmetrical styles and strong shoulders are important.  Peplum style skirts and jackets are strong (not for the "hippie"). In addition, layering, mixing and matching plus slim, streamlined and sporty chic styles are also big trends.

Body conscious dresses mid-calf length or mini-maxi (short in front, lower in the back) were evident in the designer showings for Spring and Summer. Skirts are getting more popular (maybe we're getting tired of wearing pants all of the time) and jumpsuits are making a comeback.

There are a number of pant styles from skinny to harem and everything in between.

Belted style jackets were shown by some designers, some vests were evident and cardigans are back.

Statement shoes with lots of embellishments are really big!  Espadrilles, chunky platforms, t-strap sandals, sandal boots, ankle strap boots, high, thin, spindly heels, multiple straps, fancy, frivolous, etc. If you are adding one item this season make it a pair of statement shoes. If your legs aren't good wear them with slacks. Stay away from them if you have big feet.

Handbags are still huge (getting bigger) and now the oversize clutch is appearing.

Accessories will be adorned with butterfly appliqués, ruffles, and tassels. Watch for stacked bangles, and obi (wrap) belts.

Before spending money for trendy pieces complete a wardrobe audit then make a list of needed clothing and "must haves."  Spend the most on wardrobe basics and stick to your budget.
