"Fashion Changes Style Remains"

Finally a  40 year retrospective featuring 120+ items including sketches, clothing, headpieces, shoes, jewelry, audio recordings, etc. from one of the most influential fashion designers of the second half of the 20th century. The only showing in the US at the San Francisco de Young Memorial Museum.

Yves Saint Laurent changed the way modern women dress designing pants like his womans tuxedo "le smoking. "He often said that all a woman needed to be fashionable was a pair of pants, a sweater and a raincoat" making pants a staple in every woman's wardrobe.

He was inspired by street fashions, like gypsy inspired designs, and other cultures, his Moroccan caftans etc. He was a master colorist and was inspired by artists like Picasso, Miró, Matisse, Mondrian, and Braque.

Gypsy Inspired

Diana Vreeland, the legendary magazine editor called him "a living genius" and "the Pied Piper of fashion."  His revolutionary designs were in demand by stylish women all over the world setting fashion trends.

 

 

He said in an interview in 1983: "A woman's wardrobe shouldn't change every six months. You should be able to use the pieces you already own and add to them. Because they are like timeless classics."

Fashion show runs thru April 5, 2009.
