Construct Compensation Packages That Reward Behavior That Motivates Employees to Achieve Goals
Most CEOs and many managers realize a common principle of motivation: Achieve goals by rewarding the behavior you want from your team. This principle applies to you as well, whether you run a group or are just a part of a group.
Let's just use an example that is not directly in the business area. A state government needs more revenue from its sales tax. Does it increase its rate from 8 to 10% (penalizes those that spend) or does it offer a $400 rebate for the purchase of a new vehicle (rewarding spending behavior)? While this is quite obvious to us, it often escapes those in government.
So back to business. As a manager you can construct compensation packages that reward behavior that motivates employees to achieve goals, like incentives for new accounts or for cost saving ideas. As a non-manager, you can influence or motivate others through compliments, little gifts and other forms of appreciation/recognition of their contributions. Praise and recognition of accomplishments in front of the group do not have to be limited to managers. Thank you cards signed by group members can work wonders for the recipient as well as motivating everyone in the group.
Just remember the basic principle: reward the behavior you want.
