Maria Callas Visits the Italian Cultural Institute

“Maria Callas: a Woman, a Voice, a Myth”

The Italian Cultural Institute has been a neighbor to The Barbary Coast neighborhood in San Francisco for many years.  A place to learn Italian, view Italian movies and artwork, and attend other cultural events that are Italian related. Recently they moved to a new location: 814 Montgomery Street (at Gold Street).

To celebrate their new location they have an exhibit “Maria Callas: a Woman, a Voice, a Myth” thru December 2, 2010. The exhibit has stage costumes worn by Ms. Callas plus some of her own clothing and jewels worn on and off the stage. It also offers a complete photographic portrait of her life and career.

Maria was born in the USA and grew up in New York and Greece. She performed in seven seasons playing roles in 157 performances. She spoke 4 languages fluently and was an accomplished pianist in addition to being a great opera singer.

Visit the new Institute before December 2 and listen to recordings and learn more about Maria. Exhibition hours are 10 -5 Monday thru Friday.
