Improving Your Job Performance by Taking Time Off

By R. David Silva

Give Your Mind and Your Body a Break!

Keeping your job and advancing your career are more difficult today than perhaps ever before.  A common key to success is working long hours at the office as well as bringing work home.  While this may get you "caught up", you risk the danger of getting too close to the problem and thus adopt the customary solutions.

You need to get away from all of the issues and data so that your subconscious can play around with the challenges.  Give your mind and your body a break from your work routine. Take a day off from looking at the computer and do something that's not work related but which is enjoyable to you.

When you do go back to the project, there's a good chance you will have an entirely new perspective.  You'll see the issues from different angles and be able to craft "more creative" solutions to your assignments.

There is the hackneyed adage that "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy".  But in this day of instant communication and data overload, the truth of this adage is probably more profound than before.

Even routine chores and functions can be improved when one brings a refreshed attitude to their job routine.  Taking time off is time well spent in trying to improve your contributions and thus your career.
