How to Manage Your Boss – Part 1

By R. David Silva

Bosses can be viewed in many ways but the goal for you, as a subordinate, is to have your boss working for your career benefit.  You want to have he or she become an advocate for you and your ability to contribute to the firm. In order to have your boss reach this level of commitment to your career, you need to develop an effective strategy and then as flawlessly as possible implement the strategy.  You will in essence be marketing yourself to your boss.

The first step in this process is to identify what motivates your boss.  To find out, you need to determine what type of boss you have.  Bosses can be divided into 3 categories:

1)    Those that know your job thoroughly and can easily identify when you go off the rails;
2)    Those know little or nothing about how to do your job and are worried about how you do your job; and
3)    Those that know little or nothing about how to do your job and are mostly unconcerned.

To determine which type of boss you are working for you should persue three areas of inquiry: checking their work history, interviewing their former subordinates and talk to your boss about his marching orders and plans. Once you have determined the category that best describes your boss, you can plan your strategy.  Remember the goal is to have your boss working for your career benefit (being supportive of expanding your responsibilities and authority).

In the future, we’ll examine some suggested strategies for each of the three classifications a boss.
