Pack like a pro
Before stuffing your suitcase, listen to what our expert has to say

No matter the season or the reason, when traveling, Cathie Hehman said, "Keep it light."
As warmer weather approaches, travel increases -- and the 4fashionadvice.com publisher advises a little planning can go a long way. Hehman, of San Francisco, owned her own upscale tennis apparel company before moving west when her husband was transferred in 1984. Once in sunny California, the wheels started turning.
"I noticed that people downtown were really looking terrible," Hehman said. "It was like none of them cared how they looked. There was like this universal, 'You better like me for who I am,' attitude. Clothes weren't important -- and I think clothes really say a lot about who you are."
Her feelings were so strong, Hehman decided to create her website. For the past four years, she has been sharing her expertise with the world -- and as an avid traveler, Hehman has packing down to a science.
TIPS FROM A PRO "First of all, I try to figure out what I'm doing, what activities, and then figure out clothes for those activities," Hehman said. Once you've done this: • Limit the number of things you bring. • Pack clothes you can wear more than once. • Slacks don't wrinkle easily; bring three or four for daytime (including what you wore on the plane) and a few for evening. Tops: • Cotton turtlenecks with pants are great for sight-seeing, but consider something a little dressier for evening. Footwear: • A pair of nice, comfortable flats will cover you during day walking, with heels for evening. Outerwear: • Don't take more than one coat. Instead, consider a jacket for daytime and a pashmina for evening. Accessories: • A lot of bright-colored scarves and jewelry spice up any ensemble. "With a fabulous scarf and a good pair of earrings, you can still feel stylish," Hehman said. • Never bring your best jewelry. "You don't want to have to worry about losing it," Hehman said. • Pack one larger purse for day use and a smaller one for evening. Final advice? • Keep a checklist while packing and bring it along. "This will help you to make sure you're leaving with everything you came with," she said. "When you're traveling, it means you're packing and unpacking a lot ... so you don't want too many things to have to keep track of. I try to take one basic color, like black slacks, because all of my tops go with this."
