What kind of dress do you wear to a formal event?

A formal event is a very dressy occasion. Invitations that specify black-tie are considered formal events. Years ago when you were invited to a formal event women were expected to wear a floor-length gown. Long dresses are still correct today, especially for very formal events. However cocktail dresses are now considered appropriate and modern for most black-tie affairs or formal events. Exceptions might be a Royal black-tie affair or Presidential Ball when a floor-length is a better choice. Dressy pants and tops are also appropriate black-tie apparel today. If you know the hostess you may want to discuss what the expected attire is for the event. Choose what suits you, your legs, and your relative age.
