  • Achieving New Year’s Weight Loss Goals

January, 2012.  Another New Year day has come and gone.  Once again it’s hard not to make several resolutions especially around weight lost and exercise.   Making resolutions might work for a day or two and they might even work for a few weeks, but eventually we revert back to our old behaviors.  Every year I love to make several New Year resolutions.  For a moment it gives me a feeling of power and control over my future actions.  I also know that my commitment to those resolutions have no staying power.  Within a few weeks or even a few days I am back to habits that have been part of my life for decades.  This year, however, I really would like to figure out how to behave differently, so I’ve decided to make changes very slowly.

  • Fitness Goals for the New Year

Losing weight continues to be the number one New Year's Resolution and if that's to become a long term reality, exercise is an important part of the equation.  When it comes to fitness goals, ideally they should include something specific for every component of fitness that you need to focus on.  These might include muscle endurance, muscle strength, cardiovascular endurance and /or flexibility. To make the goal measurable, consider the amount of time, type of activity (cycling, weight lifting, swimming, etc.), intensity, frequency and progression for each goal.
  • How to Pamper Yourself, Start the New Year Right

A good look in the mirror at your shape will tell you if you need to change your diet for a healthier you. If you are overweight, make a plan to lose some of those extra pounds. A few less calories and a good walk everyday will help you look and feel better. Rate the progress of your diet every month. If you have gotten away from your routine of fewer calories and exercise to lose pounds, start over. Rome wasn’t built in one day!

  • Tiens-toi droite!  Stand up Straight!

Imagine for a moment a woman dressed in a beautiful designer suit, with her shoulders slumped forward, her back rounded, her chin down and her stomach relaxed.  This is not a woman who would stand out in a crowd or project confidence. Now, imagine the same woman wearing the same suit but standing tall with her back straight, shoulders drawn back and down, chin parallel to the floor, stomach in, and her glutes (gluteal muscles) squeezed together!  Heads will turn and she'll be admired for her carriage, her style and the confidence she projects.
  • Healing From Breast Cancer

I have had several clients over the years who have gone through their own journey of healing from breast cancer, and have given me the brilliant suggestion which I am now passing to my readers. It is simple, but makes sense that once chemotherapy has begun and before the hair begins to fall out, make a move to empower yourself by shaving your head. This will put the issue of losing your locks in your hands and avoid the shock of losing clumps of hair without warning. Again, anything to take yourself from victim to an assertive state of mind is so valuable.

  • Make Vacation Eating Healthier

It is especially important to maintain a healthy eating plan while away from home on vacation. Traveling can be stressful, especially dealing with airport security and the uncertainty of air travel.  But eating a whole foods diet can help you be more relaxed and have less trouble sleeping in strange beds.
  • Stretching for Better Health

Spend hours at your desk? Travel long distances in an airplane? Need more flexibility? By stretching in a chair or in an airplane seat for just a few minutes, you will feel more flexible, have more energy and be more productive.

  • Spinal Health, Keeping Your Back Healthy

There are several things that can influence the spine throughout our lifetimes and throughout our daily lives. The cumulative effects of small circumstances may not even become a consideration to most of us. However collectively, they may have a great influence over the  function of the spine.  I will review three mechanical aspects of the body that can have a significant impact upon the stability of the spine.

  • Holiday Eating

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and the December holidays are upon us.  This is no time for regrets for eating too much turkey--there is much work to be done before the holiday parties are in full swing.  Forgive yourself for eating all of that stuffing and mashed potatoes.
