FDA Approves Anthelios SX

 Over-the-Counter Sunscreen Product

Several years ago the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a sunscreen from L'Oreal, Anthelios SX, to be sold over-the-counter (OTC) for the prevention of sunburn and for protection against ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays. It has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15.

Anthelios SX contains an ingredient called Mexoryl thought to be helpful in preventing wrinkles, brown spots, yellowing, sagging and aging of the skin. When researchers tested the product Mexoryl, avobenzone, titanium dioxide plus other ingredients they found Mexoryl more effective in protecting against UVA light. UVA light goes through the outer layer of skin into the dermis and does more damage than UVB light.

The FDA press release quoted Steven Galson, M.D., Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "Sunscreens are an important part of total sun protection strategy as consumers arm themselves against the harmful sun rays...While this product provides protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays, FDA continues to recommend that in addition to using a sunscreen, consumers protect themselves from sun exposure by limiting time in the sun and wearing protective clothing."
